Questions and Answers

If you find yourself unexpectedly pregnant, you will feel conflicting emotions. There may be uncertainties about your future and your baby's future.

On this page we aim to answer questions about how baby adoption works. Sometimes it's helpful to start by talking to someone, in confidence, besides your family and friends.

You will need to make difficult decisions. You may think about keeping the baby, having an abortion, or you may find that adoption is a real alternative for you both...

‘I couldn't go through nine months of pregnancy and then give my baby away.’

It's not easy to decide to place your baby for adoption, but it might be right for you and your baby in the long term. It is a choice which takes careful thought and you may want to talk about this with your baby's father, your family and other people you can trust.

‘Won't people think I'm unloving or selfish if I say I am not in a position to support and care for a child?’

Some people may do but it actually means you're concerned about being a good parent, have thought things through, and recognise that raising a child can be difficult even with the help of family and friends. There's nothing wrong with being realistic and facing facts. It's not selfish to choose what you believe is best for yourself and your baby.

‘But what about me? Won't I always wonder about my child?’

No doubt you will think and wonder about your child and feel a sense of loss, especially around their birthday. But women who have had an abortion may also feel loss and wonder whether they made the right decision. You can think of someone in a family you can help to choose, and about whom you may receive news from time to time.

‘What would I say to family and friends afterwards - Pregnant one week and without a baby the next?’

You may feel awkward, embarrassed or guilty. You can tell people that you decided on adoption because, although it was a very painful choice, you believe it was the right decision for you and your baby.

‘Wouldn't my child feel rejected by me?’

Making the right decision for you and your baby is a responsible and caring action. The adoptive family will be encouraged to explain to your child will know that you made a difficult but positive, caring decision which you felt was best for him or her; enabling them to grow up loved, happy and secure, in a family, at a time when you felt unable to be a parent. You can write a letter to your child to explains your decision.

‘Don't adopted children feel mixed up about who they really are?’

Adopted children are now brought up knowing how and why they are adopted. Research shows that most adults adopted as babies consider being adopted as "no big deal"

‘Will I know anything about me baby's new parents?’

You can be involved in the process of choosing a family for your baby. There are many people who want to adopt and you may be able to meet them if you wish. In addition, you may supply information and photographs which the adoptive parents can share with your child.

‘Can I have information about my child after he or she is adopted?’

The adoption agency can make arrangements with the adoptive family for you to receive agreed information.

‘How can I find out more?’
